 Elizabeth Harvey Jameson 1822-1894

There is a mistake in E. O. Jameson's book "The Jamesons in America"[1] on page 364, concerning Elizabeth Hervey Jameson (# 1710). Although E.O.Jameson gets the opening lineage correctly (Hugh3, Alexander2, Hugh1), he then lists the parents incorrectly: "daughter of Hugh [1767] and Janet (Brocklebank) Jameson." The correct parents would be Hugh [1667] and Janet (Brock) Jameson (page 326), where Elizabeth Hervey Jameson [# 1710] is listed correctly as a child.

The Hugh Jameson married to Janet Brocklebank can be found on page 325 and is listed as # 1663. There is no mention or listing of any child named Elizabeth connected with this family. Furthermore this Hugh Jameson [1663] died 28 Dec 1813, 17 years before Elizabeth Harvey Jameson [1710] was born.

The number 1767 shown in conjunction with Hugh Jameson in the book on page 364 (and herein above), is actually assigned to Daniel Jameson (page 338) born 13 Sep 1827 the son of Daniel [1679] and Mary (Twiss) Jameson. This Daniel Jameson died in early life 6 Nov 1846 at age 19. It appears his inclusion in this is strictly random and coincidental. He is in no way involved, other than he too is a descendant of the immigrant of this Jameson family

This mix-up clearly appears to be a mistake of editing, perhaps of typographical nature and confined to just the parents listing in the 'narrative' on page 364, where both the father is completely and apparently randomly misnumered and the mother is identified incorrectly. There can be no explanation for the misnumbering, apart from carelessness, whereas the mothers name Janet Brocklebank substituted for the correct Janet Brock can be understood given the uncanny similarity of names and that Hugh and Janet (Brocklebank) Jameson were closely related - aunt and uncle to Hugh and Janet (Brock) Jameson.

There is also the support from documents of Hugh Jameson's [1667] estate, which shows that seven children were living at the time of his death in 1835.[2] This jives with the known eight children of he and Janet (Brock), one - James Brock Jameson having died in 1827. Furthermore the 1927 will of the incorrect Hugh Jameson [1663] and Janet (Brocklebank) shows he had ten children living at the time of his death.[3] This also jives with the known eleven children of that marriage, one of whom - Clarrisa died when very young.

A marriage between Hugh Jameson and Janet Brock is further documented in the Brock genealogy section of the book "The History of Barnet, Vermont,[4] where it is separately established that Hugh Jameson [1667], his siblings and his parents were living at that time. Hugh Jameson [1663] however was known to be married and living some distance away in Canadaguia, NY since shortly after his marriage in 1785.

All of Hugh and Janet (Brocklenank) Jameson's children were born in Canadaigua, Ontario Co., NY, consistent with where he and Janet (Brocklebamk) had been living.

The children of Hugh and Janet (Brock) Jameson were born either in Vermont, consistent with where he and his parents were known to be living at that time, or in the Riga area of Genesee/Monroe Co., NY, consistent with where he and his brothers had migrated in the early 1800's.

Furthermore, the migration of the children of each family do not seem similar nor do they appear to cross in any instance.

In summary it should be concluded that the first paragraph concerning Elizabeth Hervey Jameson [No. 1710] on page 364 of E.O. Jameson's "The Jamesons in America" was in part incorrect and should in fact have been as follows:
