- Enlisted 24 Apr 1861 12th Reg't., NY Vol., served two years. Re-enlisted 8th Reg't., NY Artillery and served to the end of the war. He was in most of the battles of the Army of the Potomac from the first Bull Run to the surrender of Lee at Appomattox Courthouse. From a private soldier he was promoted to first sergeant, second lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain and 1 Jan 1865 received a major's commission. Often detailed on special duty in command of different regiments. Twice made prisoner, confined once at Libby Prison and once in Lynchburg from which he escaped, traveled for 24 days and hundreds of miles until reaching the Union lines at Wheeling, WV. Participated in more than 40 engagements, wounded in the assault on Petersburgh, VA.
