 1740 Presbyterian Church Survey

   Last modified: 17 May 2023

In 1740, The Presbyterian Church of County Londonderry, Ulster, conducted a survey of households of those belonging to the church. Because the Presbyterian church was so dominant in Ulster, this is about the only known collection resembling a record of inhabitants of this area at that time and amounts to a what we can consider a census taken in County Londonderry,[1] Ulster Ireland. This collection includes those in the parish of Dunboe, just west of the city of Coleraine.

This document lists four (4) Jamison males, apparently living close to each other, in Dunboe. These were: John, Matew, Adam and Thomas. These "Jamison" families are likely related, perhaps closely. We know that John Jameson, a son of Edward Jameson was living here at that time, because he was listed as such in 1741 Will (probate) of his Uncle Jonathan Jameson, brother of Edward, then living in Dunbarton, New Hampshire.[2] The John Jamison listed in the New Hampshire Will, is undoubtly the John Jamison listed in the Presbyterian Households' survey

It is thought that these four (4) Jamison households are likely related, perhaps closely, that they could be brothers, or perhaps sons of Jonathan (listed as "John" in this survey). Further study and analysis will be necessary to figure out exactly who these Jamisons really are and how they correctly connect with each other. For now, we have them listed as brothers to each other and all as the sons of Edward, as described in their uncle's will, regarding John.
